The Lloyds Market

During the 17th century the London trade market experienced an increase in demand for ship and cargo insurance. As a result, an individual by the name of Edward Lloyds began issuing marine insurance policies from his coffee shop on Tower St. By the 1730’s the name Edward Lloyds would become infamous for shipping insurance coverage and the Lloyds market was born. 

In 1811 the Lloyds agency was operating and gathering extensive information through its network of agents around the world to create guidelines for coverage.
